First off, bootcamps are lead by certified personal trainers and/or athletic coaches, not aerobic instructors. This is not to say that there aren’t some aerobic instructors who are also certified personal trainers; but for the most part they are not. Therefore, bootcamps are more like group personal training classes rather than aerobic dance classes.
Another difference is how the class format is structured. Both bootcamps and aerobic classes consist of a warm-up, exercise segment, and cool-down but that’s where the similarities end. Bootcamps incorporate more strength building movements performed with less rest periods between the exercises and where you move from one exercise to the next (also known as circuit-style training). This is because bootcamps are about total body conditioning rather than dance moves to music.
Many fitness industry experts agree that circuit-style classes that incorporate strength training will be more effective when it comes to burning fat, developing a great physique and building a body that can perform when you need it most.
Bootcamps, like aerobic classes, offer a variety of class formats. But bootcamps also focus on components of agility, balance, coordination, strength, and athletic performance which will transfer over to sport and daily life activities. Aerobic classes on the other hand are not designed to specifically help you perform better in sport and daily life tasks.
Bootcamps also incorporate many exercise tools, or toys, that differ from aerobic classes such as medicine balls, stability balls, ladders, hurdles, cones, free weights, and resistance bands or tubing.
Does this mean we are against doing aerobic classes? Of course not! But with all the various types of exercise classes and camps out there you need to decipher which ones will closely match your fitness goals. And, since most folks are looking to lose fat, improve their appearance, and be able to perform better in their sport or daily life activities we prefer bootcamps-based group classes over aerobic classes.
